Abstract
Those Who Breathe Once is a collection of poetry in five parts; each section is set off with a single-vowel poem that highlights the theme. Put simply, themes for this body of work are, in order: family/childhood, images and the body, love and loss, food and what food can signify, and finally working class perseverance. This creative thesis explores those themes though free verse poetry that is inspired by and uses spoken-word style rhythm and line breaks, along with frequent internal rhyme. Moreover, most pieces in the following collection rely heavily on image to convey what is at stake for not only the speaker, but also for everyone involved.
