Abstract
August 1973 is a fictional novella set in Kankakee, Illinois in 1973. Eighteen-year-old David Burke spends much of his summer caught between the pressures of what he thinks he wants, and what he thinks others want of him. Over the month of August, he learns to accept himself and his fate, whether he is ultimately happy with the outcome or not.
