Final Abstract for URS Program
St. Louis is unique in its approach to arts and culture. The creation of the Zoo Museum District (ZMD) to support the Saint Louis Zoo, Art Museum, Science Center, Missouri History Museum, and Missouri Botanical Garden helps keep admission free for four of these organizations. Several other organizations outside the ZMD also strive to make their admissions or services free or low-cost. Compared to cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and San Diego, where admission to attractions such as zoos, museums, and theatres is higher, St. Louis stands out as an attractive, budget-friendly tourist destination. However, these organizations do not just attract individuals from out of town; they have incredible benefits to those who live and work right here in St. Louis, from creating jobs to increasing community connectedness. This research will examine the economic and social benefits of accessible arts and culture to the St. Louis region and propose ways both the community and city government can help fund these organizations that offer their services to the community.
